This course provides team members with the managed markets foundation they need to be able to engage in thoughtful discussions about managed care using appropriate terminology.
After completing this course, participants will be able to
- Incorporate managed markets terminology into everyday interactions with physicians, pharmacists, nurses, and colleagues
- Describe the interrelationships among payers, providers, patients, distributors, and manufacturers in the buying process
- Compare and contrast the different managed markets channels (e.g. commercial, Medicare, Medicaid, employers, group purchasing organizations) and their impact on drug selection, management, and reimbursement
- Explain the influence of the Pharmacy & Therapeutics Committee on the ability of doctors to prescribe a particular product
- Discuss the tools and techniques used by payers and health plans to control drug utilization and drive selection (e.g., co-pays and coinsurance, formularies, prior authorization)
- Discuss the impact on market share of tier placement and generic availability in the class
